WEversions: Sonic Research and Curatorial Practice Platform
WEversions is a research-led platform and digital archive curated by Dr. Matt Williams, based in London, United Kingdom. Focusing on the intersection of sound, curatorial practice, and cultural activism, the project was developed as part of a practice-based PhD. WEversions serves as a tool for excavating historical sites of cultural resistance through sonic and expanded publishing practices. The platform hosts a variety of commissioned sound works that explore themes of iconoclasm, public space, and the challenge to established power structures. The project is closely linked to Williams' work as a curator of Public Programmes at the Camden Art Centre and his academic background at University College London. By utilizing curation as an investigative tool, WEversions facilitates interdisciplinary engagement and knowledge exchange. The site's content includes sound-work commissions that parallel research into monumental graffiti and the voices excluded from public narratives, featuring collaborations and projects involving artists such as Isabel Nolan, Olivia Plender, and Kathrin Böhm. Through these sonic explorations, WEversions provides a unique perspective on cultural resistance and the role of sound in archiving and expressing collective histories. The initiative emphasizes the importance of expanded publishing as a means to reach diverse audiences and foster a deeper understanding of historical and contemporary social movements. Based in the United Kingdom, WEversions continues to bridge the gap between academic research and public sonic art.
