Tanin Torabi: Award-Winning Performance Artist, Dancer, and Filmmaker
Tanin Torabi is an Iranian performance artist, dancer, and multi-award-winning filmmaker whose multidisciplinary practice bridges the gap between contemporary dance and cinematography. Originally from Tehran and currently based between Ireland and France, Tanin Torabi holds an MA in Contemporary Dance from the University of Limerick. Her work is deeply rooted in her background in sociology and her experiences navigating urban environments where movement is often restricted or regulated. Renowned for her innovative single-take short films, Tanin Torabi has gained international acclaim for pushing the boundaries of screendance. Her breakthrough film, "The Circle," featuring a solo dance in a public square in Tehran, brought her global attention, leading to her recognition by Dance Magazine as one of the "9 Screendance Artists You Should Know" in 2021. Her projects, such as "In Plain Sight" and "The Deriva," involve performers interacting with city surroundings, turning everyday urban flows into choreographed narratives. Tanin Torabi’s artistic vision often explores the concept of the "illegal dance" and uses movement as a form of social inquiry and resistance. She has showcased her films at over 150 international festivals and institutions, receiving more than 30 awards. In addition to her filmmaking, she is an active choreographer and performer, collaborating with international artists and investigating the human body's relationship to public space, culture, and visibility.
