Sylvia Kouveli: Documentary Photography and Visual Sociology
Sylvia Kouveli is an Athens-based documentary photographer and research-based artist who specializes in visual sociology. Her work is characterized by a deep commitment to social issues, particularly those related to gender, illness, and public space interventions. Holding a Masters in Visual Sociology from Goldsmiths, University of London, Sylvia Kouveli integrates sensory methodologies and sociological research into her artistic practice, aiming to make complex social issues accessible to the public. Her portfolio features impactful projects such as '#bOObs', a photography series dedicated to normalizing the diversity of female chests and raising breast cancer awareness, and 'But you don't look ill', an exploration of the social stigma surrounding inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Sylvia Kouveli also collaborated on 'Holding Patterns', a documentary project capturing the lives of 22 women during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her photography has been exhibited internationally, including at the Athens Photo Festival and venues in Los Angeles and Barcelona. By bridging the gap between social research and art, she creates visual narratives that foster empathy and drive social change. She is passionate about raising social issues on public platforms, using documentary photography as a tool for advocacy and education. Through her lens, she explores themes of identity and physicality, challenging social norms and fostering safe spaces for conversation within the community.
