Space A: Interdisciplinary Art Practice and Creative Artist Residencies
Space A is a pioneering autonomous and non-profit artist initiative dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary art practices in Nepal. Established in 2008 by a diverse collective of visual artists, interior designers, jewelry designers, musicians, and writers, the organization has become a vital hub for contemporary creative expression. Located in the historic Babarmahal area of Kathmandu, Space A provides a stable and inclusive platform for critical analysis, reflective dialogue, and information exchange among the local and international art communities. At the core of Space A's activities is the Kathmandu International Artist-in-Residence (KIAR) program. This initiative offers immersive 30-day and 60-day residencies that allow creators to engage deeply with the local cultural and socio-political landscape. By facilitating collaboration between residents and local experts, critics, and curators, Space A encourages the production of experimental work that transcends traditional boundaries. The organization also hosts the Space A Fellowship, specifically designed to support budding Nepalese talent under the age of 30 through mentorship, workspace, and material support. Beyond residencies, Space A is active in organizing discursive events, exhibitions, and educational workshops, such as the Meditative Mandala series and collaborative performances involving music, poetry, and painting. Its mission to enrich the contemporary art landscape is driven by a commitment to positive societal change through the creative arts. Founded by artists like Jupiter Pradhan, the initiative continues to be a beacon for experimental visual art, including media art, sound art, and public installations, ensuring that the vibrant traditions of Nepal are integrated with modern artistic innovation.
