Silence Project: Conceptual Art, Installations, and Performance Art

Silence Project is a multidisciplinary art initiative and series of conceptual projects founded by Finnish artist Nina Backman. At its core, Silence Project explores the complex interplay between silence, nature, and the modern urban environment. One of its most recognized components is The Silence Meal, a performative dining experience where participants share a meal in complete silence, stripping away social conventions to focus on sensory perception and presence. The project extends into photography, sculpture, and video, often utilizing the stark beauty of the Finnish landscape to evoke themes of introspection and environmental connection. Silence Project functions as a collaborative platform, engaging with various institutions, galleries, and public spaces to host workshops and exhibitions. These interventions aim to create 'islands of silence' within the noise of contemporary life, encouraging a deeper understanding of our surroundings and ourselves. By integrating performance art with spatial design and community engagement, Silence Project challenges the traditional boundaries of artistic practice. The initiative has been showcased internationally, bringing its unique Finnish perspective on quietude and conceptual depth to diverse audiences. Through its various iterations, including the A Million Trees to Finland campaign and the Green Train project, Silence Project continues to investigate how silence and collective action can be used as tools for social and artistic transformation.
