Sheung Yiu: Image-Centered Artist Exploring Algorithmic Photography
Sheung Yiu is a Hong-Kong-born, Helsinki-based image-centered artist and researcher whose practice operates at the critical intersection of photography and large-scale computation. In his research-driven work, Sheung Yiu frequently collaborates with multi-disciplinary experts, including remote sensing scientists, to investigate the evolving nature of vision in a digital society. His artistic output explores how imaging practices—from satellite imagery to facial recognition—transform our understanding of the world and our position within it. The work of Sheung Yiu takes diverse forms, including photography, video essays, desktop performances, exhibition installations, and artist books. A primary focus of his current research is the history and contemporary application of face reading and facial recognition, examining how photographs are increasingly used as predictive data. By bridging the gap between art and science, Sheung Yiu challenges the ontology of photography in the age of computer vision and computer graphics. Sheung Yiu is currently a doctoral researcher in photography at Aalto University. His work has received international recognition, being selected as a FOAM Talent 2024 and a member of the FUTURES photography platform. His exhibitions have been hosted by prominent institutions such as the Hasselblad Foundation in Sweden, Taikwun Contemporary in Hong Kong, and the Circulation(s) Festival in France. Through his multidisciplinary approach, Sheung Yiu provides a unique lens on the complexities of networked images and the political implications of algorithmic perception.
