Owen Brown: Contemporary Painting, Drawing, and Multi-Disciplinary Art
Owen Brown is a distinguished contemporary artist whose practice is rooted in the world’s complex beauty and the friction of internal interpretation. Born in Chicago and trained as a classical musician, Owen Brown turned to visual art at the age of twenty-three, subsequently earning degrees from Yale University and the University of Chicago, as well as studying at the California College of the Arts. His artistic approach is characterized by a deep engagement with both figurative and abstract traditions, often exploring themes of longing, time, emotion, and recovery. Based in Minneapolis after three decades in San Francisco, Owen Brown has developed a prolific body of work that spans painting, drawing, and large-scale installations. One of his notable projects, the installation “Units of Measure,” was created during a residency at the Land Institute in Kansas. His interdisciplinary spirit is further evidenced through collaborations with poets like Emily Wolahan and choreographers such as Anat Shinar. Brown’s works have been acquired by prestigious institutions, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Weisman Museum of Minneapolis, and the Minnesota Orchestra. The artist’s philosophy emphasizes the importance of stillness and wait within the creative process, aiming to uncover and describe the human experience in new ways. His work has been featured in numerous solo and juried exhibitions across the United States, Europe, and Asia, and has been reviewed in publications like the San Francisco Chronicle and Aesthetica. Represented nationally by galleries such as Holly Hunt and Curina, Owen Brown continues to produce evocative art that challenges viewers to see beyond the surface of immediate understanding.
