Megumi Shimizu | Performance Art and Contemporary Drawing
Megumi Shimizu is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses performance art, drawing of actions, and installation. Born in Osaka and having spent significant portions of her career in Beijing and Hangzhou before relocating to Kanagawa, Japan, Shimizu’s work is deeply informed by her interest in cultural anthropology and the structural boundaries within Asian societies. She holds a Master’s degree in Photography from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and a BA in Japanese Painting from the Kyoto College of Art and Design. Her artistic approach is notably influenced by the physicality of Chinese calligraphy, which she translates into live performances and dynamic drawings. Shimizu’s works have been showcased at prestigious venues and events, including the Beijing Minsheng Art Museum, the Saitama International Art Festival, and Land Art Mongolia 360. She is also a co-organizer of the improvisation performance group Koui Izen. Beyond her personal practice, Megumi Shimizu has contributed to the art community through lectures and workshops at institutions such as the Goethe-Institute Beijing and Shantou University. Her work continues to explore the dialogue between the body, space, and cultural identity across East Asia.
