Basak Colak's creative work

Başak Çolak - Contemporary Multidisciplinary Artist and Painter

Başak Çolak (b. 1994, Ankara) is a contemporary Turkish artist currently living and working in Bodrum. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in the deconstruction of life through personal experience, emphasizing the vital connection between human consciousness and the natural world. Başak Çolak primarily works across multiple disciplines, including painting, installation, sculpture, photography, and video. Her paintings often utilize oil on paper or canvas, while her recent sculptural work has evolved to incorporate found and natural materials such as roots, trees, and branches. These works aim to bridge the gap between human interiority and the physical environment, often acting as a medium for ecological inquiry and philosophical questioning. With a BA in English Language and Literature from Hacettepe University and a BA in Painting from Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University—where she graduated with first honors—Başak Çolak blends analytic and creative thinking in her thematic explorations of existence and nature. She has gained significant recognition in the Turkish contemporary art scene, with her work featured in prestigious venues such as the Akbank 43rd Contemporary Artist Prize Exhibition, EArt Gallery, and the BASE İstanbul exhibition. Her project 'İç ve Dış' (Inner and Outer) exemplifies her approach, using tree branches and charcoal drawings to represent the duality of external reality and internal perception. Through her meticulous observation and use of diverse techniques, Başak Çolak continues to investigate how the surroundings affect individuals on emotional and existential levels, making her a compelling voice in modern environmental and conceptual art.
