Dongkyun Vak: Contemporary Photography and Visual Media Practice

Dongkyun Vak is a Seoul-based photographer and image producer who investigates the morphogenetic structure of objects within the contemporary visual landscape. Drawing from science and technology studies, actor-network theory, and morphology, his work treats objects not as neutral tools but as dense "black boxes" embedded in complex social and technical systems. Vak's artistic inquiry often centers on the modernist architectural principle "form follows function," examining how man-made technology both adapts to and shapes human experience. Originally trained as a painter at the Korea National University of Arts, Dongkyun Vak transitioned to photography during his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, attracted by the medium's mobility and realistic descriptive power. His multidisciplinary practice incorporates 3D modeling, data visualization, and video alongside traditional photography to reconstruct technologically generated environments. His notable series, such as Symptoms, TM2.0, and Artifacts, have gained international recognition. Specifically, his project Heatwave was awarded the prestigious A New Gaze 3 photography prize by Vontobel, leading to solo exhibitions in Zurich and Turin. Through his investigative lens, Vak visualizes the visuality of the Anthropocene, capturing the disconcerting yet seductive nature of environments defined by new technologies. As the director of Studio Generic™, Dongkyun Vak continues to bridge the gap between commercial and artistic imaging, researching the protocols of contemporary visual media.
