URBANSHAPE - Graphic Cartographies and Map Design by Paolo Gianfrancesco
URBANSHAPE is a visionary creative project and design studio founded by architect, photographer, and graphic designer Paolo Gianfrancesco. Centered around the intersection of architecture, geography, and art, URBANSHAPE specializes in the creation of "graphic cartographies"—a set of meticulously designed maps that reimagine the urban landscape. Based in Reykjavik, Iceland, Gianfrancesco brings an architect's eye for detail and spatial equilibrium to each piece, resulting in maps that are as functional as they are aesthetically captivating. The URBANSHAPE collection is extensive, covering 50 European capitals, 51 major American cities, and 118 Italian provinces. Each map is characterized by its vibrant, modern design and is physically presented in a traditional folded street map format, emphasizing its accessibility for everyday use. The ideology behind URBANSHAPE is to find the essential form and beauty within urban complexity, providing a unique perspective on the cities we inhabit. Beyond cartography, the studio's influence extends into various design disciplines, including architecture and interior design, as seen in projects like the Iceland Parliament Hotel. However, URBANSHAPE remains the primary brand for Gianfrancesco’s graphic explorations. The maps serve as both artistic statements and practical guides, celebrating the diverse character of global metropolises. With a focus on high-quality production and innovative design, URBANSHAPE continues to redefine how we perceive and interact with the graphic representation of space and place.
