Juan Alvarez (Wamoo) - Video Collage Artist and New Media Creator
Juan Alvarez (Wamoo) is a New York-based Dominican-American audiovisual artist whose interdisciplinary practice explores the complex intersections of visual art, self-produced music, and performance. Often working under the moniker Wamoo, he creates experimental music videos and video collage works that utilize a blend of self-produced and found footage. His artistic language is heavily influenced by early digital aesthetics, video game culture, and the visual vocabulary of gaming, which he uses to explore narratives of immigration, assimilation, and the friction of the coming-of-age experience. Juan Alvarez (Wamoo) is the creator of several significant solo works, most notably 'Tranquilo' (2019-2025), a serialized music video art film that serves as a continuous narrative of personal growth and cultural disruption. Other notable projects include the space opera 'GOLD: a journey thru space and time' and the visual album 'Zebra.' His work has been exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), The Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, the FluxusMuseum in Greece, and the Brooklyn Museum. Juan Alvarez (Wamoo) has been recognized with numerous fellowships and residencies, including the 2025-26 BRICLab Video Art Residency, the 2025 En Foco Artist Fellowship, and the NARS International Artist Residency in Brooklyn. His academic background in philosophy and history from SUNY Albany informs his thematic investigations into income inequality, gentrification, and digital identity.
