Susanna Tan's creative work

Susanna Tan | Contemporary Visual Artist | Botanical Art | Material Poetics | Singapore & Venice

Susanna Tan is a distinguished visual artist, researcher, and producer whose multidisciplinary practice bridges the gap between science, history, and the arts. Based between Singapore and Venice, her work primarily investigates the complex ways in which plants function as repositories for human emotions and historical narratives. Susanna Tan employs a methodology that weaves together extensive archival research, direct field encounters, and material poetics, resulting in a diverse body of work that includes text, image, and large-scale installations. One of her most significant ongoing projects, the Sad Plant Index, serves as a conceptual map of the emotional lives of plants across various times and geographies. Susanna Tan has a strong academic background, holding a BFA from Goldsmiths, University of London. Her artistic contributions have been recognized with numerous residencies at institutions such as LASALLE College of the Arts, the Indian Heritage Centre Singapore, and the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Furthermore, Susanna Tan has exhibited her work internationally in cities including Stuttgart, Onomichi, and Penang, demonstrating her ability to engage with global audiences on themes of ecology, memory, and the environment. Through her practice, Susanna Tan continues to challenge perceptions of the natural world and its intrinsic connection to the human experience.
