Stephan Lucka Documentary and Portrait Photography Portfolio

Stephan Lucka is a distinguished freelance photographer whose practice centers on documentary, portraiture, and reportage. With a profound interest in human connection, Stephan Lucka utilizes his camera to explore how individuals relate to the world around them, often focusing on themes of identity, freedom, and justice. His work frequently uncovers the extraordinary within the everyday and the unknown within the obvious. One of his most significant achievements is the publication of the photobook "Das Gefühl, das nur wir kennen" (The Feeling Only We Know), which provides an intimate look at the German scout movement and was awarded a bronze medal at the German Photobook Prize in 2023. Another impactful project, "Forbidden Voices," documents the prohibition of women singing in Iran, showcasing his commitment to socially relevant storytelling. Stephan Lucka holds a Master of Arts in photography from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Dortmund, graduating in 2022. Before transitioning into photography, he had a career as a professional musician, a background that perhaps informs the rhythmic and evocative quality of his visual compositions. His editorial work has been widely published in prestigious outlets such as STERN, Der Spiegel, and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). He is an active member of the German Society for Photography (DGPh) and several other professional organizations. Through his long-term projects and portrait series, Stephan Lucka continues to investigate the delicate balance between community, individual freedom, and the cultural frameworks that shape our lives.
