Sogol & Joubeen Studio | Curatorial Practice and Visual Art Research

Sogol & Joubeen Studio is an Iranian artistic duo and curatorial platform established in Tehran by visual artists Sogol Kashani and Joubeen Mireskandari. The studio is dedicated to exploring the aesthetics of archival projects, photography, and filmmaking. Their work often centers on the analysis of overlooked elements within the contemporary Iranian social context, examining issues of identity and the transformation of domestic spaces. A hallmark of their practice is the photo-based research project Between Our Walls, which was featured at the Les Rencontres d’Arles festival in 2023. This project narrates the history of a house in Tehran between 1956 and 2014, reflecting on broader societal changes. Other significant projects include A House / Second Cut and the documentary film Eight to Ten:Thirty. Sogol & Joubeen Studio investigates the thirst for modernity and its impact on traditional beliefs, creating a dialogue between the past and the imagined future. Their practice bridges the gap between individual artistic expression and institutional curatorial research, making them a significant voice in the Middle Eastern contemporary art scene. By engaging with both archival materials and contemporary filmmaking, they provide a unique perspective on the evolving cultural landscape of Iran.
