Madelyn Byrd Experimental Sound Artist and Slowfoam Project Creator
Madelyn Byrd is a multi-disciplinary artist, sound designer, and educator based in Berlin, known primarily for the experimental project Slowfoam. Their work occupies the peripheries of ambient, leftfield, and electro-acoustic music, weaving together elements of field recordings, guitar, voice, and digital synthesis. Madelyn Byrd's practice is deeply rooted in 'sonic worldbuilding,' a methodology that draws from diverse intellectual fields such as hydrofeminism, neuroaesthetics, microbiology, and post-capitalism. Through Slowfoam, Madelyn Byrd has released acclaimed works like the 2024 LP Transcorporeal Portal on Somewhere Press and Worlding with Earth on Mappa. Their compositions often explore the intersections of the personal and the planetary, creating reflection zones described as 'genreless whirls.' Beyond solo production, Madelyn Byrd is a co-founder of the record label and platform Gravity Pleasure, which focuses on FLINTA+ and more-than-human voices. They also participate in collaborative projects like FEU FOU and CHIMERA. As a recipient of the Musicboard Berlin scholarship and the 2025 raster open call soundtrack prize, Madelyn Byrd continues to push the boundaries of contemporary sound studies through performance, education, and creative mentorship.
