Simina Oprescu | Electroacoustic Composer and Sound Artist
Simina Oprescu is a Romanian electroacoustic composer and sound artist who explores the physical, perceptual, and emotional dimensions of sound across the audible and inaudible spectrum. Combining electroacoustic composition, spatial sound, and psychoacoustics, she approaches sound as both material and affect—a force that shapes perception, presence, and relation. Her practice blends synthetic and natural elements, drawing from diverse sound sources and field recordings from physical and natural environments. Working across stereo and multi-channel formats, Simina Oprescu investigates how sound resonates within space and the body, engaging with ideas of attention, unity, and the vibratory nature of matter. Her work gravitates toward intimacy, inviting porous, open-ended listening experiences that drift between scientific inquiry and poetic exploration. Simina Oprescu holds a degree in Photography and Dynamic Imagery from the National University of Arts in Bucharest and studied acousmatic composition at the Royal Conservatory in Mons. Her background in visual arts influences her approach to sound, particularly in how fixed and moving images can reinforce auditory perception. Notable projects include the research-driven "Sound of Matter," which reconstructs the harmonic spectrum of historical church bells, and "The Choreography of Water," a collaborative performance exploring fluid computing. As a member of the SHAPE+ platform artist roster, her work has been presented internationally at institutions such as Museum Tinguely, EVA International, and various galleries in Berlin and Bucharest. Simina Oprescu remains dedicated to listening as an act of care and inquiry, bridging technical experimentation with the subtle, transformative potential of sound.
