Shibboleth: Social Publishing and Inclusive Book Design Studio
Shibboleth is a social cooperative and creative practice based in Milano, Italy, that operates at the intersection of language, art, and social justice. Founded by a collective including Alice Peach, Libri Finti Clandestini, Clive Britton, James M. Bradburne, Ilaria Bollati, and Allegra Baggio Corradi, the organization focuses on long-term collaborative projects with marginalized groups, such as children born in prison, individuals with Down syndrome, and migrants. These workshops are designed to bridge the gap between internal thought and external articulation, utilizing artistic exercises to explore the transition from intention to verbal and non-verbal expression. The outcomes of these collaborations are typically manifested as physical publications, which Shibboleth describes as sequences of image-words folded into space-time sequences—commonly known as books. A notable example of their work is the project Autaut, a social publishing initiative that utilizes photography and text to share the world as perceived by individuals with autism. Through these efforts, Shibboleth challenges traditional notions of authorship, promoting a creative commons where diverse voices are documented. The studio’s practice is deeply rooted in the philosophy of language, treating it as a liquid medium that clarifies and complicates reality simultaneously. By engaging with communities through weekly activities, Shibboleth creates a platform for those often excluded from mainstream cultural narratives to express their unique perspectives through experimental book design and collaborative storytelling.
