Sergio Lucena: Contemporary Abstract Painting and Atmospheric Artistry
Sergio Lucena is a prominent contemporary artist born in Paraíba, Brazil, in 1963, who currently lives and works in São Paulo. His artistic journey began with studies in physics and psychology at the Federal University of Paraíba, providing a unique intellectual foundation for his later creative pursuits. Initially known for fantastical figuration featuring mystical beings, Sergio Lucena underwent a significant stylistic shift towards abstraction, influenced by his experiences in international residencies across Berlin, Washington, D.C., and Denmark. Today, his work is characterized by large abstract paintings and atmospheric landscapes that utilize thick layers of paint to achieve a delicate residue he refers to as 'paint dust.' This technique results in vivid, misty pastel tones that explore the duality of light and dark, materiality and spirituality. In 2012, Sergio Lucena was honored with the Mário Pedrosa Prize for contemporary artist of the year by the Brazilian Association of Art Critics. His paintings act as a spiritual language, attempting to bridge the gap between the concrete and the sublime. Represented by the Mariane Ibrahim Gallery in the United States and Simões de Assis in Brazil, his work is included in numerous institutional collections globally. Through repetitive processes of application and removal of paint, Lucena creates a subjective experience for the viewer, inviting an immersion into new perceptions of reality and the sacred nature of interrelations.
