Sander Coers: Fine Art Photographer Exploring Masculinity and Memory

Sander Coers is a Rotterdam-based photographer and artist who investigates the intersections of masculinity, memory, and personal heritage. Born in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen in 1997 and a graduate of the Willem de Kooning Academy, his practice often balances on the border between documentary and fiction. Sander Coers is known for using a tender and melancholic gaze to deconstruct how personal and collective histories are internalized over time. His notable projects, such as POST and Eulogy, utilize diverse media including traditional film photography, UV-printed plywood, ceramics, and AI-generated imagery to create layered visual experiences. In his series POST, he uses AI to expand on family archives, exploring how perceptions of the past are constructed and manipulated in the digital age. His recent project Eulogy dives into postcolonial trauma and intergenerational silence, weaving together family relics and multimedia installations. Sander Coers has been widely recognized for his work, receiving awards such as the Photo Talent Award and being selected for the Foam Talent program. His aesthetic is defined by highly saturated colors, romanticized landscapes, and a cinematic quality that seeks to establish new perspectives on intimacy and the transition from youth to adulthood. By integrating emerging technologies with tactile materials, he creates a physical representation of the fragility of memory, inviting viewers to look beyond the surface of idealized images.
