Roberto Chessa: Geometric Contemporary Art and Abstract Painting
Roberto Chessa is a Sardinian contemporary artist and painter whose work is deeply rooted in the intersection of geometric abstraction and Hip Hop culture. Based in Sassari, Italy, Chessa’s artistic journey began in his adolescence, influenced by his father’s painting and the burgeoning graffiti and breakdance scene in his hometown of Nuoro. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sassari in 2005, he spent several years in London before returning to Sardinia, where his style evolved into a distinct form of geometric constructivism. Roberto Chessa describes his practice as a dialogue between order and energy. His paintings are characterized by crystallized explosions of color and elevated, sharp-edged shapes that suggest a sense of architectural expansion. This aesthetic is directly informed by his experience as a professional breakdancer, translating the physical dynamism and rhythm of movement onto the canvas. Beyond painting, his portfolio includes three-dimensional sculptures, works on paper, and limited-edition fine art prints. As a versatile creator, he has collaborated with cultural associations and curators on various residencies and workshops, frequently teaching Hip Hop culture to younger generations. Roberto Chessa continues to push the boundaries of visual media, blending traditional techniques with contemporary experimentation in his studio.
