Peter T McCarthy: Contemporary Textile and Mixed Media Art
Peter T McCarthy is an internationally recognised artist whose practice spans the disciplines of textile art, painting, and printmaking. Born in Australia and currently working between Sydney and Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, his work is characterized by a unique exploration of unconventional materials and the subversion of traditional forms. McCarthy’s recent practice is particularly noted for its use of vibrantly coloured zippers, which he weaves and stitches into large-scale, bold abstract constructions. These works, such as the Regalia series, investigate the intersection of faith and lived experience. By transforming everyday objects into complex visual narratives, he challenges viewers to reconsider societal values and prestige. A finalist for the 2022 Loewe Craft Prize and a recipient of the Surface Design Association’s Unconventional Materials Award, Peter T McCarthy has exhibited extensively in Australia, Europe, and West Africa. His meditative compositions provide a space for reflection, merging the precious with the mundane to create a distinct and transformative visual language in the field of contemporary fiber arts.
