Paulo Canilhas is a Portuguese contemporary visual artist whose practice is defined by a multi-disciplinary approach to creative expression. Based in Almada, Portugal, Canilhas has developed a significant body of work that traverses the boundaries of painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and video. His artistic education was shaped by the Advanced Course in Visual Arts at AR.CO – Center for Art and Visual Communication, alongside an impactful artistic residency in the studio of sculptor António Júlio. He often investigates themes of time, memory, and the learning of silence within the frantic pace of modern life. His use of diverse materials—specifically aluminum, which he prefers for three-dimensional works, as well as canvas and paper—allows him to build a bridge between his personal reality and the observations of the external world. His projects, such as the exhibitions Lastro, Monsanto, a fábula de um bosque, and Mind the Gap, reflect a rigorous conceptual foundation and a commitment to creating a differentiating dialogue with his audience. Paulo Canilhas deliberately avoids being pigeonholed into a single discipline, choosing instead to navigate freely between media to best articulate his ideas.
