Northing: Cultural Platform for East Asian Art and Design
Northing, also known as the Centre for East Asian Art and Culture, is a non-profit organization based in Bergen, Norway, founded by architect Ben Wenhou Yu and designer Yilei Wang. The platform serves as a vital bridge for creative exchange between Norway and East Asian regions, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. Operating out of its physical venue, Northing Space, the organization hosts a diverse range of exhibitions and events spanning fine art, illustration, photography, and architecture. A significant arm of its operations is Kinakaal Forlag, an independent publishing house and design studio that has received numerous accolades, including multiple 'Most Beautiful Norwegian Books of the Year' awards. Additionally, Northing manages Elephanten, a specialized bookshop focused on art and design publications. By facilitating direct collaboration between international artists and designers, Northing enriches the local cultural scene and promotes cross-disciplinary dialogue. Through projects like the poetry anthology 'Fjell Hav Poesi' and various artist residencies, the platform continues to expand its role in cultural mediation and global artistic networking. Its work is supported by institutions such as Arts Council Norway and the Bergen Municipality, reflecting its established presence in the Nordic cultural ecosystem.
