Niccol Fornari (Rome, 1996) is a conceptual visual artist whose practice unfolds between painting and writing. His work explores pictorial surfaces as fields of linguistic tension, in which text functions as map, trace, and connective device. Words—fragmented or layered—operate as spatial elements that guide the viewer’s gaze and generate relationships within the composition. In his practice, painting takes the form of a process-based device in which gesture, material, and language are articulated into open visual structures shaped by specific thematic cores. Each work develops from a conceptual fulcrum that directs the composition and governs the relationship between sign and surface. Text acts as a structuring and connective element, generating trajectories of meaning and semantic tension within the pictorial space. After graduating from a linguistic high school in 2015, Fornari initially approached architecture and fashion design, experiences that shaped his visual sensibility and contributed to a compositional approach evident in his organization of space and surface rhythm. In 2018 he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome, Painting Department, completing his BA in 2024. His research is informed by Willem de Kooning, Emilio Vedova, and Franz Kline, whose radical approaches to painting remain key references for his practice. In December 2024 he presented his first solo exhibition at the Salone della Scuderia di Fiorano, an independent exhibition space in the countryside curated by Alessandro Boncompagni Ludovisi. In June 2025 he opened the solo exhibition Altro da s at Kou Gallery, Rome. He has also taken part in group exhibitions, including Frammenti Visivi and Espresso Vol. VIII, organized by ColabArt.
