Melis Ugurlu: Architectural Designer and Interior Design Consultant
Melis Ugurlu is a multi-disciplinary architectural designer, writer, and editor currently based in London. She runs an independent architecture and design studio, focusing on the intersection of spatial design, materiality, and research-driven criticism. Melis Ugurlu received her Bachelor of Architecture from Rice University and a Master’s degree from the Architectural Association. Her professional experience includes leading roles at design consultancies and collaborations with notable firms in New York, Houston, and Istanbul. Her portfolio showcases a diverse range of projects, including the interior design of the Sloane Street Deli in Belgravia, where she emphasized custom joinery, textures, and a curated artistic vision. Other significant works include a holiday residence in Portugal and a pop-up store on Regent Street. Beyond traditional architecture, Melis Ugurlu is deeply involved in editorial and curatorial practices. She served as an assistant curator for the Pavilion of Turkey at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale and is the deputy editor of Godshot magazine. She also publishes Minor Edits, a weekly newsletter exploring design philosophy and editorial resources. Her approach, often described as "Generative Criticism," integrates intensive research and writing into the design process to create thoughtful, atmosphere-driven spaces. Through her work, Melis Ugurlu explores how the mundane aspects of construction can be juxtaposed with planetary and cultural narratives.
