Massimo Motta: Contemporary Fine Art Photography and Visual Innovation.
Massimo Motta is a contemporary fine art photographer based in Milan, Italy, whose artistic journey is defined by a continuous search for a unique stylistic language. Originally a researcher in biological sciences, Motta transitioned into photography as a self-taught artist, initially focusing on naturalistic and realistic subjects. Over time, his work shifted toward more conceptual and meta-functional explorations of the medium. In 2010, he began investigating botanical forms through a fractal-inspired lens, followed by the acclaimed Shadows and Subway series in 2012, which captured the rhythmic movement of Milan’s urban landscape. Motta’s work took a significant turn with the Light and Night project, where he utilized objects to critique consumerism and its impact on society and the environment. This period led to the development of his signature Pattern of Media technique, a hybrid approach that fuses photography with physical paint to create a dialogue between the captured moment and emotional expression. His recent series, Trasfigurazioni (2023-2024), represents a return to pure photography, yet maintains a painterly quality where the camera is wielded like a brush. Motta’s work has been documented in monographs such as On This Side of Time and Photography beyond Photography, and has been exhibited in prominent venues like Milan's Casa della Cultura. His practice remains a testament to the evolving nature of the image, where the boundaries of photography are constantly tested and expanded through artistic innovation.
