Lumpen Station: Independent Radio Art Space and Experimental Sound Platform

Lumpen Station is a Swiss-based independent online radio art space and digital archive that investigates radio broadcasting as an expanded exhibition format within the field of contemporary art. Originally established in 2019 as a sonic extension of espace libre visarte Biel/Bienne, it has since transitioned into a multifaceted digital platform dedicated to experimental sonic practices and audio-visual hybridization. The organization develops its curatorial program through artist invitations, intervening across institutional art venues, museums, and non-traditional, site-responsive contexts. Lumpen Station functions as a growing repository and a freely accessible site for sound works, conceptual audio, and experimental narrative. Its curatorial strategy focuses on connectivity across regional and international networks, balancing remote production with site-specific physical installations. These installations serve as laboratories for artists and immersive spaces for collective listening. The platform organizes artistic contributions into metaphorical "rooms" or "walls," providing an individualized presence for each artist within its collective framework. Operated by the association Let it Happening, Lumpen Station is recognized as a non-profit Swiss webradio based in Biel/Bienne. Its activities emphasize the potential of digital tools to mutualize sound production and reception. By archiving and distributing all live broadcasts as podcasts, Lumpen Station extends the visibility and archival life of contemporary sound art, bridging the gap between temporary performance and permanent digital access.
