Ling Tan's creative work

Ling Tan: Multidisciplinary Artist and Interactive Designer

Ling Tan is a UK-based Singaporean multidisciplinary artist and designer whose practice explores the complex intersection of technology, social engagement, and the built environment. With a background in architecture from the UCL Bartlett Interactive Architecture Lab, Ling Tan utilizes wearable technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and citizen participation to investigate collective agency and responsibility in urban spaces. Her work often involves large-scale participatory projects where communities use custom-built tools to record subjective perceptions of their surroundings. Key projects in her portfolio include the SUPERPOWER! Toolkit, a series of gesture-driven wearables that enable users to map issues like public safety and gender representation, and SUPERGESTURES, which questions the impact of smart city agendas on younger generations. Her environmental initiatives, such as Pollution Explorers and WearAQ, use sensory data to make air quality issues tangible for local residents. Ling Tan's work has been exhibited at prestigious international venues, including the Centre Pompidou in France, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Barbican in the UK, and HeK in Switzerland. Through her studio HAQUE TAN and various collaborations, she continues to design architectures and cultural infrastructures that embrace uncertainty and plural perspectives. Based in London, Ling Tan bridges the gap between digital innovation and social impact, creating visually stunning and intellectually stimulating works that challenge our understanding of the modern world.
