JUS/Jus Lucas: Multidisciplinary Artist

Justin Lucas (b. 1989, Knysna, South Africa), known professionally as JUS, is a multidisciplinary artist based in Knysna, South Africa. Obtained his MFA at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha. Working across painting, drawing, sculpture, and digital media, Lucas is best known for his distinctive visual language that draws from contemporary subculture and popular imagery. His practice engages with the aesthetics and symbolism of “NERD” culture, positioning itself at the intersection of high and low art traditions. Lucas’s work is characterized by an exploration of identity, symbolism, and visual culture through the lens of subcultural influence. Drawing inspiration from the aesthetics and narratives associated with nerd culture—spanning comics, graffiti, gaming, technology, and internet visuality—his practice interrogates the boundaries between fine art and popular culture. Through a multidisciplinary approach, Lucas constructs layered works that combine graphic sensibilities with sculptural and painterly elements, reflecting an ongoing dialogue between contemporary visual language and traditional artistic processes. Justin Lucas has exhibited in several notable exhibitions, including presentations at Knysna Fine Art, Knysna, South Africa; art.b Gallery, Cape Town, South Africa; the Athenaeum during the Kearne Dragon Album Launch, Gqeberha, South Africa; and GFI Art Gallery, Gqeberha, South Africa. His work is held in various private national and international collections. Lucas has also participated in prominent art competitions, including the Top 40 of the Portrait Awards 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa, the Top 100 of the Sasol New Signatures 2016 in Pretoria, South Africa, and Vuleka 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa.
