Julia Ihlenburg: Mixed Media Art and Sustainable Painting

Julia Ihlenburg is a German contemporary artist and art student at the RPTU Landau. Born in Waiblingen in 2002, she has lived and worked in Landau in der Pfalz since 2021, where she pursues her studies at the Institute for Art Sciences. Her artistic practice is defined by a playful and experimental approach to materials, frequently incorporating markers, tape, spray paint, acrylics, and ink into her mixed media compositions. A central theme in Julia Ihlenburg’s work is the depiction of everyday scenes, communication, and social interactions, notably captured in her series #YLLW (yellow). Her style is characterized by a sketch-like freshness and a graffiti-inspired aesthetic that brings a sense of immediacy to her figurative portrayals. Sustainability plays a crucial role in her creative process; she often upcycles discarded objects found on the streets of Landau—such as old vinyl records, cardboard boxes, and banners—using them as canvases for her art. This practice reflects her commitment to environmental consciousness and the unique charm of used objects. In 2024, Julia Ihlenburg was honored with the Nachwuchspreis für Junge Kunst (Young Art Award) by the Kulturzentrum Herrenhof in Mußbach. Her work has been featured in various exhibitions, including the Slevogthof in Leinsweiler and the Kulturnacht Landau. Through her art, she addresses complex topics such as self-perception, social inequality, and female empowerment, aiming to create statements of diversity, tolerance, and hope for social progress. Her works often serve as a reflection of modern society’s fast-paced nature and late-stage capitalism while maintaining an authentic, un-perfected visual narrative.
