Josh Armitage: Contemporary Painter Exploring Memory and Architecture

Josh Armitage is a contemporary painter based in London whose practice focuses on the intersection of sensory experience, memory, and architectural form. Born in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, and educated at the Royal College of Art and Manchester School of Art, Josh Armitage utilizes a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, and charcoal to create works that investigate the spiritual and emotional resonance of specific locations. His artistic process often begins with observational drawings that evolve into repeated motifs, ranging from intimate domestic facades to expansive skyscapes. This repetition serves as a vehicle for exploring formal painterly concerns alongside deeper themes of loss and the 'genius loci' or spirit of a place. His work has been featured in notable international exhibitions, including presentations at Guest Gallery in Brooklyn, Sunday Painter for Condo London, and South Parade. In addition to his studio practice, Josh Armitage is an Associate Lecturer at institutions such as Kingston School of Art and Camberwell College of Art. His paintings are characterized by a muted yet colorful palette and a tension between the haunting nature of the subject matter and the physical presence of the paint. Through his exploration of place and atmosphere, he creates an intangible magic that exists outside of time.
