Jennifer Higgie: Renowned Art Historian, Critic, and Author
Jennifer Higgie is a prominent Australian art critic, novelist, screenwriter, and curator who has become a leading voice in the exploration of women's contributions to art history. With a background in Fine Art from the Canberra School of Art and the Victorian College of the Arts, she brings a practitioner's perspective to her extensive writing and editorial work. For over two decades, Jennifer Higgie was a central figure at frieze magazine, serving as reviews editor, co-editor, and eventually editorial director and editor-at-large. Her work at frieze helped shape contemporary art discourse on a global scale. In addition to her editorial career, Jennifer Higgie has authored several significant books that challenge traditional art historical narratives. Her 2021 publication, The Mirror and the Palette: Rebellion, Revolution and Resilience, examines 500 years of women's self-portraits, while her 2023 book, The Other Side: A Journey into Women, Art and the Spirit World, explores the mystical and spiritual dimensions of female artistic practice. She is also a prolific podcast host, notably presenting Bow Down, a series dedicated to overlooked women artists from the past, and Artists' Artists for the National Gallery of Australia. Her curatorial projects, such as the 2023 exhibition Thin Skin at the Monash University Museum of Art, further demonstrate her deep engagement with contemporary painting. Throughout her career, Jennifer Higgie has served on numerous prestigious boards and judging panels, including the Turner Prize and the Paul Hamlyn Award, solidifying her status as a vital figure in the international art community.
