Ileana Mariotto: Contemporary Portrait Collage Art
Ileana Mariotto is a Caracas-born visual artist currently living and working in Antwerp, Belgium. Her artistic journey began with a foundation in industrial design, followed by a distinguished career as an art director for fashion shows and live events across Europe. Since 2014, she has focused exclusively on her original collage technique, producing rich and vibrant works that transform existing paper materials into emotive portraits. Utilizing a wide array of sources—from high-fashion magazines like Vogue and Elle to vintage newspapers and music posters—she builds textured pieces on canvas and wood. Her work is often organized into thematic collections. 'The Icons' features celebrated figures such as Mick Jagger, Marilyn Monroe, and Frida Kahlo, while 'The Little Encounters' focuses on the diverse faces and stories she encounters during her travels to places like China and Ecuador. Every piece by Ileana Mariotto is preceded by extensive research to capture the personality and history of her subjects, making her commissioned portraits particularly sought after. Her unique approach has led to collaborations like 'The Painters Project' with photographer Eric Ceccarini. Each collage is a multi-layered narrative, where the physical material and the subject engage in a fascinating dialogue, inviting viewers to look closer and discover the hidden stories within the paper fragments.
