Ignorance is Bliss: Sustainable Materials and Industrial Waste Design
Ignorance is Bliss is a research-driven design practice and brand founded by Lithuanian designer Agne Kucerenkaite. The project serves as an umbrella term for ongoing experimentation and cross-disciplinary thinking, specifically focusing on the conversion of industrial waste and secondary materials into functional interior and exterior products. The philosophy of Ignorance is Bliss challenges the historical negligence and pollution generated since the Industrial Revolution by giving a new identity to waste materials through circular design models. Key collections from Ignorance is Bliss include porcelain tableware colored with industrial metal waste, such as iron from drinking water supply and soil remediation residues. The studio also produces unique ceramic tiles and hand-tufted rugs, like the Juno and Lutetia collections, which utilize upcycled textile dyes derived from botanical and metal waste. Recent innovations include 'Amber Waste is Bliss,' a project developing biocomposites from amber dust, sewage-extracted cellulose, and hemp remains after oil extraction. Based in the Netherlands and collaborating with partners in Lithuania, Ignorance is Bliss explores the intersection of material science, traditional craftsmanship, and environmental sustainability. The work has been applied to architectural building materials, furniture, and interior surfaces, emphasizing a holistic framework that considers the health and environmental footprint of products throughout their entire life cycle. By substituting factory-produced substances with repurposed waste, the studio creates high-value items that contribute to a healthier and more sustainable built environment.
