Hantu/weber+delsaux: Performance Art, Multimedia Installations, and Research
Hantu/weber+delsaux is an acclaimed artistic duo and collective founded by French artists Pascale Weber and Jean Delsaux. The entity centers its research and creative output on the relationship between the human body, its environment, and the persistent layers of memory that shape identity. Their extensive body of work encompasses performance art, video, photography, and multimedia installations, often created in situ across global locations such as Indonesia, Canada, and Norway. Pascale Weber, a professor at the Sorbonne and EHESS, brings a focus to territory, collective identity, and the sensorial experience of the body. Her practice often explores gender, desire, and the connection between the physical self and the living world through what she terms eco-eroticism. Jean Delsaux, a plastic artist, contributes deep expertise in the perception of space and visual derailleurs, utilizing video and screen installations to create immersive experiential spaces rather than mere objects of observation. One of their significant collaborative frameworks is Encyclo-fictions, which brings together scientific, ethnological, and robotic research into artistic performance. In 2022, Hantu/weber+delsaux launched Howlin' Ghosts, a project reflecting on the Covid-19 crisis through masked photography and clandestine performances. Their work is regularly showcased in major institutions like the Palais de Tokyo and the Musée de la chasse et de la nature, as well as through their own publishing house, Editions Hors-du-Carré. Hantu/weber+delsaux continues to challenge the boundaries of contemporary creation by merging rigorous research with intuitive, punk-inspired exploration.
