Habby Osk: Sculpture, Photography, and Installation Artist

Habby Osk is an Icelandic visual artist currently living and working in Brooklyn, New York. Born and raised in Akureyri, Iceland, her artistic practice is deeply rooted in the exploration of basic physics, specifically the concepts of balance, movement, gravity, time, and force. These themes are expressed through her diverse body of work which includes sculptures, photography, and large-scale installations. Habby Osk frequently tests the limits of stability, positioning objects in insecure or fragile configurations to capture the fleeting moment before a potential collapse. Her choice of materials is eclectic and symbolic, often contrasting permanent substances like wood, cement, and plaster with transient or impermanent ones such as jello, wax, and inflated plastic bags. This duality allows her to investigate how minor incidents or changes can trigger significant transformations over time. With a minimal color palette and lightly treated materials, Habby Osk directs the viewer's focus toward the inherent tension within her structures. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the AKI ArtEz University of the Arts in the Netherlands. Her work has been exhibited globally, with notable solo exhibitions at the Kopavogur Art Museum and Akureyri Art Museum in Iceland. She is a multi-time recipient of the Artists' Salaries from the Icelandic Centre of Research and has participated in residencies at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) and the Vermont Studio Center. Through her art, Habby Osk invites a meditation on the precariousness of existence and the delicate state of stillness maintained just before destruction.
