Caroline Lundblad's creative work

Caroline Lundblad: Renowned Butoh Artist and Contemporary Choreographer

Caroline Lundblad is a distinguished Butoh artist and choreographer based in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Kyoto, Japan, performing under the professional artist name Frauke. Her artistic practice is defined by a deep investigation into the body’s relationship with its environment and the concept of presence. Trained in classical ballet and contemporary dance at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London, she later underwent intensive training in Japan under the mentorship of legendary dancer Min Tanaka at Body Weather Farm and with the SU-EN Butoh Company in Sweden. Through her extensive research, Caroline Lundblad has pioneered 'Scandinavian Butoh,' a genre that blends the raw intensity of Japanese avant-garde dance with a refined Nordic aesthetic. Her work often takes the form of site-specific performances in architectural landmarks or natural landscapes, engaging with elements of light, silence, and space. Recently, she has expanded her artistic scope by studying Noh Theatre at Oe Nohgakudou in Kyoto under Noh Master Nobuyuki Oe, integrating these traditional influences into contemporary works like 'Pearl.' Caroline Lundblad has presented her solo performances internationally across Europe and Asia and has choreographed for major institutions, including the Malmö Opera. Her dedication to the evolution of Butoh and her ability to evoke profound emotions through physical discipline make her a central figure in the international performance community. By bridging historical traditions and modern artistic research, she continues to create immersive, transformative experiences for audiences worldwide.
