FLEE Project: Documenting and Re-interpreting Peripheral Cultures
FLEE Project is an independent publishing house, record label, and curatorial platform focused on documenting and reinterpreting peripheral cultural phenomena. Founded by Olivier Duport, Alan Marzo, and Carl Åhnebrink, the project employs a research-based, transdisciplinary approach to explore the intersection of globalization, history, and contemporary art. By moving beyond superficial trends, FLEE Project seeks to understand the socio-economic and political contexts in which cultural objects and musical genres emerge. Their work is organized around three main pillars: an independent publishing house, a record label, and an exhibition platform. Through these mediums, they provide multifaceted insights into subjects ranging from Kenyan Benga music and Italian Tarantismo to Portuguese resistance songs and the environmental impacts of mining. FLEE Project collaborates with historians, musicians, and artists to create high-quality physical and digital editions that challenge unproductive nostalgia. By asking contemporary artists to revisit and reinterpret historical sounds and narratives, the platform fosters a critical dialogue between the past and the present. Ultimately, FLEE Project serves as a bridge between auditive output and original contextual input, inviting a broader audience to engage with overlooked cultural heritages and stories.
