Ellee SY Lee | Imaginary and Semi-Abstract Contemporary Painting
Ellee SY Lee is a Korean-Canadian painter based in Toronto who creates imaginary, semi-abstract works exploring the fluidity and vibrancy of existence. Having immigrated to Canada as a teenager, she developed a deep connection to art-making as a primary method for engaging with her subconscious and emotional states. Lee earned her BFA from OCAD University in 2006 and has since dedicated her practice to capturing the dynamic flow of life and the natural world. Her artistic process is fundamentally organic and intuitive, characterized by complex layers of simplified shapes, lines, and bold colors that oscillate between abstraction and representation. Central to the work of Ellee SY Lee is the theme of connectivity, blurring the lines between the seen and unseen to evoke mysticism, dreaminess, and reflection. Her inspirations are multifaceted, drawing from personal memories, Eastern traditional landscapes, Post-impressionism, and spiritual abstraction. Notable collections such as the Innerscape series offer a meditative vision of her inner world, while the Walking With You series reinterprets the beauty of her surroundings through a choreography of color and form. Lee's work often features recurring nature motifs like mountains, waters, and trees, which embody the rhythms and cycles of the environment. By embracing spontaneity and naturalness, her paintings provide a vicarious escape and a moment of solace from a fatiguing world.
