Cynthia Reynolds: Contemporary Sculpture and Installation Art
Cynthia Reynolds is an American artist based in New York City, originally from Kentucky. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in the exploration of materials often discarded or overlooked: found packing materials. For over twenty-five years, Cynthia Reynolds has focused her work on the conceptual and formal possibilities of packaging, which she describes as the 'fat of the object world.' Her sculptures and installations utilize materials like bubble wrap, foam, and plastic, as well as traditional clay, to comment on the stability of the built environment and the inherent vulnerability of the human body. Reynolds earned her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from the University of Washington. Her work has been exhibited extensively in venues such as the Boccara ART Brooklyn, 440 Gallery, and Manifest Gallery. By manipulating the scale and material properties of ubiquitous items, Cynthia Reynolds investigates complex notions of safety, privacy, and the margins between object and non-object. Her process often involves obsessive building and layering, resulting in translucent and modular structures that occupy space with a delicate yet profound presence. Living and working in New York City, she continues to push the boundaries of contemporary sculpture through her unique engagement with salvaged materials.
