Charlotte Brathwaite is a visionary director and artist whose creative practice transcends traditional boundaries, merging theatre, film, music, and installation. As an Associate Professor of Theater Arts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she has established herself as a leading voice in contemporary performance. Her work is characterized by a deep commitment to illuminating the realities and dreams of marginalized communities, often centering on themes of race, power, and the complexities of the human condition. Brathwaite’s portfolio includes high-profile projects such as the Obie award-winning Prophetika: an oratorio, the opera Omar co-directed with Rhiannon Giddens, and the immersive performance Thought/Crime. She has collaborated with renowned artists like Meshell Ndegeocello, Jacqueline Woodson, and Sanford Biggers.
