Ayumiya: Creative Studio for Art Objects and Furniture Design
Ayumiya is a multidisciplinary creative studio and 'dwelling' established by sisters Ayumi and Miya in 2020. Based in Providence, Rhode Island, the studio serves as a space where objects, space, and experience are brought together through a meticulous making process. Ayumi, an artist and designer with an MFA in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, brings a graphic design background and expertise in working with glass, fiber, and wood. Miya, whose background includes over a decade of experience in restaurant kitchens, translates her understanding of food and ingredients into a unique perspective on physical materials and creation. Together, Ayumiya defines their work as a blend of functional and non-functional art objects. Their practice is rooted in a commitment to listening to materials, allowing the process to derive organically rather than being prescribed. This philosophy leads to diverse creations such as the Iyo Rug series, the Droop Series, and the Artifact Lamp. By pushing the boundaries of natural material abilities, Ayumiya transforms traditional craft into contemporary design expressions. The studio represents a lifelong creative bond, celebrating individual stories and collaborative exploration in the realm of furniture and sculptural objects.
