Ana María Gómez - Textile Research, Contemporary Weaving, and Design Studio
Ana María Gómez is a Colombian designer and researcher who established amgs, a textile design studio dedicated to exploring the tactile, visual, and spatial potential of fabrics. Based in Brussels, Ana María Gómez creates work that bridges the gap between wearable fashion, functional furniture, and artistic installations. Her practice is deeply rooted in an awareness of diverse cultural and social worlds, often manifesting in collaborative projects that honor traditional craftsmanship while introducing contemporary perspectives. One of her significant initiatives, the A Boi project, involves reinterpreting ancestral Muisca weaving symbols and techniques in collaboration with local weavers in Colombia. Additionally, her experience with traditional artisans in Benin highlights her commitment to exploring textile as a language of communication and heritage. Ana María Gómez experiments extensively with color, developing unique systems to create harmonious yet unexpected palettes that define her studio's aesthetic. Her background in theater and performance informs her interest in how textiles relate to the human body and physical space, leading to experiments with rhythm, movement, and perception. Through techniques like knotting, knitting, and pleating, she investigates the memory of shape and the structural possibilities of fiber. By blending ancestral know-how with modern design inquiry, Ana María Gómez produces pieces that are both historically grounded and relevant to current artistic landscapes.
