Amelia Foster's creative work

Amelia E. Foster: Contemporary Art, Sculpture & Installation

Amelia E. Foster is an American contemporary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Her multidisciplinary practice explores the intersections of memory, societal structures, and the liminality of the human experience. With a background as an environmental microbiologist at Oregon State University, Foster brings a unique scientific and organic perspective to her work, focusing on the transformative cycles of abuse, decay, and rebirth. Her artistic practice spans various media, including intricate drawings, tactile sculptures, and site-specific installations. Foster’s work is characterized by its intentional use of ephemeral and permanent materials—ranging from fragile graphite, pastels, and plant matter to enduring ceramic, metal, and stone. This juxtaposition allows her to investigate the fluidity of memory and the physical manifestation of collective tensions. Her approach is deeply informed by the philosophies of the Feminist Land Art movement, emphasizing the reclamation of history and embodied knowledge. Throughout her career, Amelia E. Foster has participated in prestigious residencies and exhibitions, including the Rondo Residency in Mexico City, the SVA Artist Residency Project, and showcases at PRACTICE Gallery and FOCUS Art Fair NYC. Her work often addresses themes of trauma, transformation, and the fragility of the natural world, aiming to create evocative gateways of remembering. By manipulating negative space and time-based materiality, she excavates emotions held within the subconscious and memorializes histories that resist naming.
