Igor Josifov | Visionary Performance and Contemporary Multi-Disciplinary Art

Igor Josifov is a Macedonian-born visual and performance artist who has achieved significant international recognition for his physically demanding and conceptually rich artistic practice. Since his early exhibitions in 2000, Josifov has developed a unique aesthetic language that bridges the gap between the ephemeral nature of performance and the tangible permanence of visual media. His work frequently centers on the human body as a primary vessel for exploring psychoanalytic perception, cultural identity, and the moral complexities of modern existence. Among his most influential contributions to the contemporary art world is the multi-year project Taming Fire, which combines live performance with a mastery of fire as a drawing tool, resulting in hauntingly beautiful scorched paper portraits. His performance installation 2-Dimensional has been showcased globally, including a prestigious presentation at the opening of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Modern Wing. Igor Josifov’s career is marked by high-profile collaborations and participations, such as his role in Marina Abramović’s The Artist is Present at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and his representation of North Macedonia at the Venice Biennale’s Personal Structures exhibition. Now based between San Francisco and Paris, Josifov continues to engage in ambitious projects, including a 2025 residency at the Cité internationale des arts and a landmark public mural of Amadeo Giannini in San Francisco. His work remains a powerful testament to the transformative potential of art, inviting viewers to confront vulnerability and the resilience of the human spirit through visceral, high-stakes creative interventions.
